The short answer
The short answer
A competitive moat is a durable reason a business can sustain attractive results despite competitors and substitutes. It combines value customers care about, obstacles to rivals reproducing or replacing that value, and the ability to retain enough economic benefit. A large audience, familiar brand, or expensive asset alone does not establish a moat.
01
How do you test whether an advantage is defensible?
Start with the customer decision: what alternative is available, why does the customer choose this offer, and does that preference persist without excessive discounting? Then examine the resource or mechanism behind the choice. History, trusted relationships, distinctive routines, scale economics, or switching costs can matter, but each requires evidence.
VRIO tests resources; Seven Powers describes potential mechanisms of durable advantage; Porter's Five Forces examines pressures on industry economics. Use them together to distinguish a valuable capability from a mechanism that competitors cannot readily neutralize.
02
Why does value capture matter?
A business can create substantial customer value while suppliers, channel partners, or acquisition costs consume much of the return. Review contribution after relevant costs, repeat behavior, working capital, and the resources required to renew the offer.
Hypothetical example: a product customers prefer may still be weak economically if returns and promotional costs outweigh its premium. The remedy could be product quality or channel design rather than more brand awareness.

Questions owners ask
Is growth evidence of a moat?
Growth can reflect demand, spending, favorable conditions, or genuine advantage. Check retained economics and repeat customer choice before attributing growth to a durable moat.
Can a moat weaken?
Yes. Customer needs, technology, regulation, competitor capabilities, and internal execution can change. A moat needs renewal and repeated testing, not just historical recognition.
